Who’s For the Drop in Serie A in 2009?
By: Chris | August 10th, 2008
For those of us who follow Italy’s less prolific teams, the end of the year is usually interesting for a different reason: do we get to come back to Serie A next year? In my opinion, relegation is one of the things that keeps the season interesting for everyone, and something that North American sports desperately needs (will someone please relegate the Pittsburgh Pirates?).
So, who’s it going to be this year? Catania’s current pre-season form and their smart off-season acquisitions have me confident that it wont be them, but their track record ensures that they will be part of any relegation conversation. There is a handful of usual suspects, but then who would have guessed that Parma would be leaving us at the beginning of last season?
So, place your bets. In no particular order, I’ll take Chievo, Lecce and Reggina (though I’d love to be proven wrong).
UPDATE: Well, it seems that I do indeed have my finger on the pulse of the calcio blogosphere. The top 3 candidates for relegation, based on your votes, are Chievo (17%), Reggina (16%) and Reggina (15%). Cagliari comes fourth with 11%. Of course, fully 5% percent of you think Inter is going down, so this isnt exactly an oracle.
Who will be relegated to Serie B in 2009?

I predict Inter,Milan and Lazio to get relegated

I’m gonna say Lecce, Chievo, and Cagliari. The Lecce and Chievo squads look like they have no business being in Serie A and Cagliari probably won’t be able to pull off a miracle escape yet again.

I said same thing as you Chris. Reggina lost Amoruso, Lecce looks weak and Chievo needs some serious help. On the other hand Catania have reinforced very impressively. I can’t believe Cagliari didn’t keep Ballardini though.

@Giampiero: I believe some folks are confusing “predictions” with “hopes”
