Rossoblu Bounce Back in Coppa Italia
By: Chris | September 18th, 2008Catania moved into the 5th round of the Coppa Italia on Wednesday, with a convincing 4-0 win over upstart Padova. Some might have seen Gli Elefanti as ripe for an upset, following the controversial loss to Inter on the weekend, and given Padova’s run of form in the competition to date. Quite the contrary: Catania played energetically throughout the game, with relentless midfield pressure resulting in a number of scoring opportunities. Dica, Sabato and Morimoto (twice) found the net for the home side.
What we should take away from this result is some confidence in the depth of this Catania team. Bizzarri, Tedesco, Paolucci and Plasmati (save for 15 minutes) were all given the day off, and their replacements took full advantage. This gives Zenga much flexibility, having an arsenal of competent substitutes to keep up the pace in the latter stages of any match. For this team to be successful against the top half of the table, it will have to work harder than its opponents, and this will only be successful if the likes of Morimoto, Izco and Baiocco can occasionally step in competently to contribute.
