Mourinho Making Friends in Serie A

By: Chris | September 16th, 2008

By now you’ve probably heard the exchange of words between Inter coach Jose Mourinho and Catania chief executive Pietro Lo Monaco. Following the misleadingly-close 2-1 Inter win this past weekend, Mourinho posited that the score could well have been “3-1, 4-1 or 5-1.” This was an affront to Lo Monaco, who suggested that ‘The Special One’ needed a slap upside the head, so to speak. Lo Monaco has since retracted his prescription for dental work, claiming that it was a Sicilian turn of phrase. This may not prevent him from being held to account for his words, however.

Jose aloneBeing a Chelsea supporter, as well as a keen Catania tifoso, I do have a soft place in my heart for Mourinho. I’m not sure he is ‘Special’ exactly, as the success of Avram Grant showed that it was probably Abramovich’s wallet, rather than Mourinho’s coaching genius, that was most responsible for the Blues’ ascendency. But, I don’t see how Jose’s initial comments should have been incendiary at all; it was a pretty accurate assessment of the game, in fact. Yes, Inter won on two own goals, one of which may not even have been scored at all, but on any other day Inter would have easily pocketed more. Plasmati’s first half goal represented our only real foray onto the Neroblu’s side of the pitch to that point in the game. Yes, Inter were fortunate to win, but Catania were also fortunate that Inter were weary after a week of internationals (or whatever their excuse might have been). I may be a fan, but I’m not blind.

Lo Monaco should simply have taken the high road on this one. Perhaps he should have directed his anger at Zenga for his team’s inability to execute fundamental footballing skills (like corner kicks, for example). If that’s all it takes to rile the man in charge at Catania, its going to be a long, exhausting season indeed.

As much as it pains me to stick up for catania, it’s too bad Lo Monaco couldn’t see that his words get him in trouble. Maybe if he had, he’d just go and slap Mourinho. God knows he deserves it.

Wait till Palermo plays Inter, if Mourinho pulls this shit with us, Zamparini will turn his skin into a coat for his wife.
