First Test of the Year in San Siro

By: Chris | September 9th, 2008

While fans have been pleasantly surprised by Catania’s consistent pre-season form, not to mention the opening win over Genoa, honest Etnei would readily admit that its difficult to estimate the quality of the squad based on the competition to date. This weekend poses a real test for Gli Elefanti, as they head north to face Inter, the 14th most valuable football club in the world.

celebrationThe prospects for points look dim, having been beaten in the last 4 meetings with the Nerazzurri, including consecutive 2-0 defeats. The only glimmer of hope is that Inter have 9 players returning from international duty, some of which have yet to arrive back. Perhaps add to this the surprise factor of Inter never having seen Dică and Pablo Ledesma, and we might be lucky to bring a point back from San Siro. However, given that they were surprised in the opening weekend by Samp, this is unlikely. Don’t tell that to Pablo, though.

Happily, the match will see the return of midfielder Ezequiel Carboni, which will only add depth to one of Catania’s existing strengths.

And head north they will, as Catania fans have been given the green light to travel. Unlike some other supporters (not naming any names, of course).

Oh, and stop stealing my highly original Mascara puns.

UPDATE: Ooops. Spoke too soon. Catania tifosi, have fun watching on TV.

Yeah, Maroni (the interior minister) has overruled the Osservatorio and banned the Catania fans from travelling.

Very unfortunate decision and typical of his unwillingness to look at any of these situations with any subtlety.

If past matches are any guide, however, there will still be a good number of Elefanti supporters at the Meazza, as this game always brings out a good number of exiles who now live in and around Milano.

Watching the inter-catania match i almost blew a fuse when Muntari slighly slaps Tedesco who happened to fall as if b a barracus struck him with a sledgehammer! that is absolutely pathetic, you can fake a trip in a dispute or creatively drop in a tackle but this…..i can’t believe that man can look at himself in the mirror after being shown on tv…how can his wife or girlfriend ever respect the man…i bet they slap some sense into him and make him wash the dishes 24/7. I was simply foreingly embarrased to witness the scene.
