Elefanti Hold Off Struggling Reggina
By: Chris | October 6th, 2008After missing an easy chance in the first half, Michele Paolucci scored his third goal of the season in the second half and was promptly sent off 3 minutes later, as Catania held the home side to a 1-1 draw Sunday. Catania were fortunate to escape with a clean sheet in the first half, when the Amaranti dominated but were unable to find the goal. The tight defensive play that had elevated the Sicilians to fifth in the table had disintegrated.
The Catania goal came against the flow of play, when Mariano Izco plucked the ball from the Reggina defence and pushed it to Paolucci, who found the bottom of the crossbar. However, his undisciplined takedown of Bruno Cirillo reduced Catania to 10 men, and that was all the home side needed to find an edge, and eventually, a goal.
The Rossoblu, along with the rest of Serie A, get next weekend off. They return home to face island rivals Palermo on October 19.
