Catania Drops Critical Points to Lecce
By: Chris | November 30th, 2008
This was a game that Catania may look back on at the end of next month and wish they could play over. Though the single point was enough to keep them tied for seventh in the table, a look at the upcoming schedule suggests that points are only going to get harder to come by in the coming weeks. Away to Milan, away to Fiorentina, then home to Roma and back on the road to Napoli. An objective observer might conclude that they will be lucky to come away with 2 or 3 points of the possible 12.
Zenga started an aggressive 4-3-3 formation, with the triumvirate of Mascara, Paolucci and Plasmati at the front. The trio was able to generate their share of chances in the first half, but could convert none into goals. Lecce were on their heels even into the second half, when Paolucci was finally able to put one behind Benussi, his fourth of the season. Six minutes later, Lecce’s Argentine saviour, Jose Ignacio Castillo, came off the bench and needed only sixty seconds to equalise.
Though Catania have solidified their position as a middle-table side for 2008/09, it is probably fanciful to believe that they will contend for a place in Europe. Still, relegation is probably even more unlikely, which would give Catania a fourth consecutive stay in Serie A.
